The Process Communication Model® (PCM)

Transform communication. Reduce stress. Strengthen teamwork.

The Process Communication Model® (PCM) is a practical, research-based framework that helps people understand how they communicate, what motivates them, and what happens to communication under stress—so they can connect more effectively in real time.

Benefits

What PCM helps you do

  • Communicate in a way others can hear
(not just what you mean to say)
  • Prevent miscommunication and unnecessary conflict
Reduce friction by matching message style to the moment.
  • Recognize stress patterns early and reset faster
Spot signals before communication breaks down.
  • Build stronger working relationships across different personalities
Increase trust, clarity, and respect across styles.
Overview

What is the Process Communication Model®?

PCM is a communication and personality model created by psychologist Dr. Taibi Kahler. It’s widely used for leadership, teamwork, conflict resolution, and coaching, and it became well-known after Kahler’s work with NASA in the model’s early history.

In Practice

In practice, this means

You learn what each type tends to value, how they prefer to be approached, and what stress looks like for them—so you can adapt communication with clarity and respect.

Framework

How PCM works

1

Observe behavior (especially under pressure)

2

Identify communication preferences

3

Choose the right “channel” and message style for the moment

4

Address core psychological needs that drive motivation and stress

5

Spot predictable distress patterns and use practical “antidotes” to return to effective communication

Personality Types

The 6 personality types in PCM

PCM describes six personality types that everyone has “within them” in different combinations: Thinker, Persister, Rebel, Promoter, Harmonizer, Imaginer.
